Steps that keep everyone safer.

1. Get people away from the source. If sparks or smoke are involved, evacuate the room and keep pets and kids clear.

2. Cut power at the main breaker if you safely can. Your main disconnect is at the top of your panel. If the panel itself is what's failing (buzzing, hot, sparking), do not touch it — call your utility and us both.

3. Do not use water. Electrical fires are not put out with water. If you have a Class C extinguisher and it's safe, use that. Otherwise get out.

4. Do not reset a breaker that keeps tripping. A breaker that trips more than once is telling you something is wrong on that circuit. Repeatedly resetting it can start a fire.

5. Call us and the fire department if flames are visible. Even if the fire seems small, get 911 rolling. We can be there fast, but the fire department is trained for active fires.
